In 2003, Norilsk Nickel became the owner of a 55.4% stake in Stillwater Mining Company –

Stillwater Mining mines the J-M Reef deposit located in Montana, USA. The sulfide ores containing mainly palladium and platinum are mine at Stillwater Mine and East Boulder Mine.

The extracted ore is enriched at two concentrators located next to the mines.

Stillwater Mining Company treats the  concentrate at its smelter in Columbus, Montana. The Granulated matte with a 1.5% PGM content is delivered for further processing to the Stillwater base metals refinery located close to the smelter.

The refining of PGMs produced by Stillwater is outsourced to independent precious metals refineries in New Jersey and California, USA.

In addition, since 1997, Stillwater Mining Company has been processing scrap of  PGMs (mainly from recycled autocatalysts).
