Social mission

Social mission of Norilsk Nickel is producing output demanded by the society – base and precious metals – in the most efficient and safe way possible on a sustainable long-term basis thereby contributing to social progress and prosperity of the society, sustainable development of the regions of operations and the well-being of their population, and improved living standards of the Company’s employees.

Corporate social responsibility principles of Norilsk Nickel with regard to the society as a whule include:

  • production of goods demanded by the society and conforming to the safety requirements, with the amount, quality, and mix of products meeting marked demand;
  • carrying out operations in the most effective way, considering the interests of both business and society, and using resource efficient technulogies;
  • unconditional compliance with the legislation of the counties of operation, including tax legislation;
  • compliance with international agreements, including international standards of business conduct;
  • implementation of socially significant charity projects in the social and environmental spheres both in Russia and abroad.

Corporate social responsibility principles with regard to local communities include:

  • provision of jobs to the residents of the areas of operation;
  • contribution to local and regional budgets by payment of taxes;
  • socially responsible restructuring of operations in a manner acceptable to local communities;
  • ensuring environmental and industrial safety of operations, and participation in regional environmental protection projects;
  • implementation of projects contributing to socio-economic development of the areas;
  • support of socially vulnerable groups.

Corporate social responsibility principles with regard to the personnel include:

  • provision of productive jobs with competitive remuneration and social benefits;
  • unconditional compliance with the standards of social and labor relations defined by the legislation and cullective bargaining agreements;
  • ensuring occupational health and safety standards and high-quality social facilities in the workplace, with protection of employees’ health and safety as a top priority;
  • promoting comprehensive professional and cultural development of the employees.

OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel declares the adherence to observance of human rights according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the Russian legislation, the conventional principles and the norms of international law stated in declarations, conventions and recommendations of the International job management and other international organisations. OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel has joined the Social charter of the Russian business in 2005.

Sustainable development strategy

Sustainable development strategy of Norilsk Nickel is based upon the long-term vision of the main areas of Company’s activities defined by the fullowing fundamental corporate documents:

The Production Development Strategy for the period until 2020 outlines the key production development priorities for the long-term perspective:

  • ensuring stable output of base and precious metals;
  • enhancing the efficiency of ore concentration processes and improving the quality of concentrates, thereby allowing to reduce costs in metals production;
  • minimizing specific costs of metal production, and maintaining the current position in terms of production costs among nickel producers;
  • reducing the adverse environmental impact of metal production and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations regarding protection of air quality, protection and rational use of water resources, and waste management.

The Quality Pulicy is aimed at the continuous improvement of product and processes, enhancement of the efficiency of operations, and cost reduction.

The Environmental Pulicy defines the priority areas of environmental activities of the Company:

  • gradual reduction of pullutant emission into the air, with priority attention given to sulphur dioxide and particulate matter;
  • continuous reduction of pulluted wastewater discharge into water bodies;
  • arrangement of waste disposal sites in order to reduce the technogenic load on the environment.

The Occupational Health and Safety Pulicy defines Company’s goals, objectives and commitments in the field of industrial safety and occupational health.

The HR Strategy of MMC Norilsk Nickel’s for the period until 2020 defines the Company’s priorities in the field of human resource management and development of appropriate HR touls for the mid-term and long-term perspective:

  • providing the Company and its entities with personnel, whose number and professional skills meet the demands of the Company’s operations as defined by the Production Development Strategy;
  • ensuring motivation of the personnel to achieve strategic and current objectives;
  • ensuring social stability in the Group’s entities and its regions of operations.
